The outbreak in DR Congo
The outbreak is concentrated in Ituri Province in the DRC. The World Health Organisation declared it a public health emergency of international concern in May 2026.
As of late June, the DRC had recorded more than 1,100 confirmed cases and nearly 291 confirmed deaths. Neighbouring countries have raised their alert levels in response.
Health authorities rate the risk of importation as high, given regional travel and trade. That assessment has pushed Nigeria to act early rather than wait.
How Nigeria is preparing
The NCDC says it has tightened screening at airports, seaports and land borders. Travellers from affected areas face closer checks on arrival.
The agency has also reviewed readiness across hundreds of health facilities in dozens of states and the FCT. Designated treatment centres are being assessed to handle any suspected case.
Crucially, Nigeria has recorded no Ebola case so far. Officials stress that the measures are precautionary, not a sign that the virus has entered the country.
Why early action matters
Ebola spreads through contact with bodily fluids and can move quickly once it reaches crowded areas. Health experts say early detection is the difference between a contained scare and a full outbreak.
Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya put it simply, noting that “early detection prevents patients from needing hospital admission.” Speed, he argued, saves both lives and money.
Lessons from past outbreaks
Nigeria’s response draws on hard lessons from earlier health emergencies. The country famously contained an Ebola scare in 2014, a feat widely praised by global health bodies.
That success rested on fast contact tracing, isolation and public awareness. Officials hope the same playbook can keep any new case from spreading.
Health workers remain the first line of defence and the most exposed. Authorities say training and protective gear for frontline staff are central to the current plan.
For ordinary Nigerians, the advice is steady rather than fearful. Wash hands, avoid contact with the sick, and report unusual symptoms early.
Regional cooperation
Health officials stress that no country can fight Ebola alone. Cross-border surveillance and shared data are central to stopping the virus before it travels far.
Nigeria is coordinating with regional bodies and the World Health Organisation on the response. Joint planning, officials say, makes early-warning systems stronger.
Aid groups have urged steady funding rather than panic spending. Sustained investment in clinics and staff, they argue, protects against the next outbreak too.
For now, the message to Nigerians is calm vigilance. Report symptoms, practise good hygiene, and rely on official health updates as the Ebola emergency funds go to work.
