Details of the El-Rufai CCTV contract case

The anti-graft agency filed an amended 11-count charge covering corruption, money laundering and related offences. The contract value is put at about N8.68 billion.

Charged alongside the former governor is his ex-aide Jimi Lawal, with five firms also named. The case is before Justice Hauwa’u Yusuf Buhari.

Prosecutors allege the contract for a CCTV surveillance system in Kaduna metropolis went to a firm that lacked the required experience. They say funds were moved through a network of companies.

The allegations explained

According to the ICPC, the project covered the procurement, design and installation of cameras across the city. The agency claims due process was not followed in the award.

Investigators allege the defendants received or possessed more than N2 billion between 2017 and 2022. The defence rejects the claims, and nothing has been proven.

What happens next

The court adjourned to 1 July 2026 to rule on bail applications. Until then, the legal arguments will centre on procedure and the strength of the evidence.

El-Rufai’s team has consistently denied wrongdoing in his various cases. The former governor remains a prominent and outspoken figure in national politics.

Why the case matters

Public surveillance contracts are often costly and hard to audit. Cases like this test whether large security projects deliver value or become avenues for waste.

The trial also lands amid wider debate about accountability for former governors. Anti-corruption agencies face pressure to pursue such cases to a clear conclusion.

A wider reckoning for ex-governors

The case adds to a growing list of corruption trials involving former state chief executives. Anti-graft agencies have faced criticism that such cases often drag on for years.

Campaigners say swift, transparent trials matter more than the number of arraignments. Justice delayed, they argue, weakens public faith in the fight against graft.

Supporters of the former governor insist the charges are political. They point to his outspoken criticism of the government as the real reason for the prosecutions.

The agency rejects that framing, saying it follows evidence rather than personalities. It maintains that no one, however prominent, is above scrutiny.

Observers will watch the bail ruling closely as an early signal in the case. How the court handles the application could set the tone for the trial ahead.

Public interest in the outcome

High-profile trials like this draw intense public attention. Many Nigerians see them as a measure of whether the powerful are truly held to account.

Legal experts caution against trial by social media, where verdicts are reached long before the court rules. Due process, they stress, protects the accused and the system alike.

The case is likely to feature in political debate as 2027 nears. Both supporters and critics will read the proceedings through that lens.

With both defendants pleading not guilty, the burden now rests on the prosecution. The El-Rufai CCTV contract case will unfold over the coming months in Kaduna.
