Date:

An NSCDC job racketeering case has ended in conviction, after the ICPC secured a guilty verdict against a deputy commandant who collected money for fake recruitment slots.

The Gist

  • ICPC convicts NSCDC deputy commandant
  • Crime involved fake recruitment slots
  • N4.5m collected for bogus jobs

The court convicted Idris Barde, a deputy commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. He was sentenced on 25 June 2026.

How the NSCDC job racketeering worked

The anti-graft agency said Barde collected N4.55 million under the pretence of securing NSCDC jobs for seven people. The offence dated back to around 2017.

He once served as personal assistant to a former NSCDC Commandant-General, a role that gave him access and apparent influence. Prosecutors said he traded on that position.

The money came from one complainant who expected the promised employment slots. None of the jobs materialised.

The court’s decision

Justice Ngozika Nwabulu of the FCT High Court in Kurudu, Abuja, handed down the verdict. The court convicted Barde on a two-count charge.

He was sentenced to 12 months in prison, with an option of a N4 million fine. The outcome closes a case that the ICPC pursued for years.

A common scam exposed

Recruitment fraud is a persistent problem around Nigeria’s security and paramilitary agencies. Desperate job seekers are often asked to pay for slots that do not exist.

Officials say genuine recruitment is free and based on advertised processes. Anyone demanding cash for a guaranteed job, they warn, is almost certainly a fraudster.

Why it matters

Job racketeering preys on high youth unemployment and the scramble for stable government work. Victims can lose savings they cannot afford to part with.

The ICPC presented the conviction as a warning to insiders who exploit applicants. Abusing a public office for private gain, the agency said, carries consequences.

How to avoid recruitment scams

Recruitment fraud thrives on secrecy and urgency, experts say. Fraudsters often claim a slot is limited and demand quick payment before applicants can verify anything.

Legitimate agencies advertise openings publicly and never guarantee a job for cash. Any insider promising a sure place in exchange for money is breaking the law.

Applicants are advised to confirm vacancies through official websites and notices. Crosschecking with the agency directly can expose a scam before money changes hands.

The conviction also raises questions about internal controls within the agencies. Campaigners say tighter oversight of recruitment would close the gaps fraudsters exploit.

Victims are encouraged to report demands for payment to the ICPC or the police. Coming forward, the agency says, helps build cases against repeat offenders.

For applicants, the case is a blunt reminder. A real government job never starts with a bribe.

A blow against insider fraud

The ICPC framed the conviction as a warning to officials who exploit their positions. Trading public trust for private gain, it said, carries real consequences.

Anti-corruption groups welcomed the verdict but want more such cases pursued. Convictions, they argue, deter wrongdoing far better than arrests that fizzle out.

For job seekers, the message doubles as practical advice. Verify every offer, and treat any demand for cash as a red flag.

For job seekers, the lesson is plain. Verify every recruitment notice through official channels and refuse to pay for a slot, no matter who is asking.
