NDLEA Raises Alarm Over Ogun Methamphetamine Lab

Date:

The NDLEA has raised concern over an Ogun methamphetamine lab uncovered in a forest, warning that drug barons are trying to turn Nigeria’s South-West into a hub for synthetic drug production. The agency says the trend is alarming.

Officials linked the discovery to a wider push by cartels to set up large, hidden factories deep inside forest reserves, far from prying eyes.

What the Ogun methamphetamine lab revealed

According to the agency, the laboratory was dismantled in a forest in the Ijebu East area of Ogun State. Operatives recovered a large haul during the raid.

The seizure reportedly included more than 2.4 tonnes of methamphetamine and precursor chemicals used to cook the drug at scale.

The agency said it arrested three Mexican nationals and four Nigerian suspects in connection with the operation, pointing to foreign expertise behind the local set-ups.

A worrying pattern in the South-West

The Ogun bust came weeks before a similar industrial-scale lab was uncovered in an Oyo State forest, where a Mexican expert and four Nigerians were also arrested.

The NDLEA says the back-to-back discoveries signal a deliberate attempt to plant synthetic drug factories across the region.

Forest cover, weak surveillance and proximity to ports make the area attractive to traffickers looking to produce and move drugs quietly.

Why methamphetamine worries officials

Methamphetamine is a powerful, highly addictive stimulant. Large local production can feed both domestic abuse and export rackets that damage Nigeria’s image abroad.

The involvement of foreign “cooks” suggests cartels are importing technical skill to boost output, raising the stakes for enforcement.

Health workers warn that cheaper, locally made supply could deepen addiction problems among young people.

Chemicals and communities at risk

Beyond the drugs themselves, the labs handle volatile precursor chemicals that can poison soil and water or spark fires.

Setting them up in rural forests also draws armed actors into communities that already struggle with insecurity.

What happens next

The agency has vowed to keep mapping and raiding forest hideouts, and to trace the money and chemicals feeding the labs.

Those arrested are expected to face prosecution. As with all such cases, suspects remain presumed innocent until the courts rule, and the figures cited are the agency’s provisional account pending trial.

The NDLEA is urging residents to report suspicious activity as it widens the hunt for synthetic drug networks across the South-West.

A regional drug fight

Nigeria has long been a transit point for hard drugs, but home-grown production of synthetic drugs marks a worrying shift.

Methamphetamine made locally can be cheaper and easier to move, fuelling both street sales and smuggling abroad.

The NDLEA says cartels are exploiting remote forests, weak monitoring and porous borders to set up shop.

Tackling the trend, officials argue, will need tighter control of precursor chemicals and stronger intelligence sharing.

Community tip-offs have already helped agents locate hidden sites that would otherwise be hard to find.

Still, each lab dismantled is a reminder of how deeply the trade has tried to embed itself in the region.
