What Is MTN Nigeria?

MTN Nigeria, formally MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, is a telecommunications company that provides mobile voice, internet data, broadband and mobile-money services across the country.

It is the Nigerian arm of MTN Group, the pan-African telecoms giant headquartered in Johannesburg. With around 87 million subscribers, it is the largest operator in Nigeria’s competitive mobile market.

History and Milestones

MTN Nigeria won one of the country’s first GSM licences at a landmark auction in 2001, paying $285 million, and launched commercial service in August that year in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.

It grew quickly as mobile phones spread across Nigeria, becoming the market leader. In 2019 the company listed by introduction on the Premium Board of the Nigerian Exchange, opening its ownership to local investors.

The launch of MTN MoMo, its mobile-money service, marked a major push into financial services for millions of unbanked Nigerians.

Over more than two decades, the company has helped drive Nigeria’s shift from a country where phone lines were scarce and expensive to one of Africa’s biggest mobile markets. That transformation is central to its story.

Its growth has not been without setbacks, including regulatory fines and the pressures of a volatile economy, but it has remained the market leader throughout.

MTN Nigeria Products and Services

At its core, MTN Nigeria provides mobile voice calls and internet data, the latter now its single biggest source of revenue as smartphone use grows.

Beyond the basics, it offers fixed and fibre broadband, enterprise and business solutions, and digital services. Through MTN MoMo, customers can send money, pay bills and save using a phone, even without a traditional bank account.

Its network covers cities and rural areas across all of Nigeria’s states, and it has invested heavily in expanding 4G and rolling out faster connections. For millions of users, MTN is their main gateway to the internet.

How MTN Nigeria Makes Money

MTN Nigeria earns most of its money from subscribers — the fees they pay for calls, data bundles and broadband. Data has become the fastest-growing part of that revenue.

It also earns from enterprise services, wholesale agreements and its growing fintech arm. As a listed company, it pays dividends to shareholders, making it a popular stock among Nigerian investors.

Because telecoms is capital-intensive, MTN reinvests large sums each year in towers, fibre and spectrum. Its scale lets it spread those costs across a vast subscriber base, which is central to how it stays profitable.

Leadership and Recent Performance

MTN Nigeria is led by chief executive Karl Toriola, who has headed the company since 2021.

The company posted heavy losses in 2024 as a sharp fall in the naira hurt its foreign-currency costs. It then rebounded strongly, reporting a return to profit of over one trillion naira for the 2025 financial year as tariff adjustments and subscriber growth lifted earnings.

MTN Nigeria Valuation and Scale

Valuation (reported)Around N15 trillion (NGX market cap)as of 2026, reported

MTN Nigeria is one of the most valuable companies on the Nigerian Exchange. In early 2026 its market capitalisation was reported at around 15 trillion naira, making it the most capitalised stock on the bourse.

That scale rests on its roughly 87 million subscribers and revenue that topped five trillion naira for the 2025 financial year. As a listed company its market value moves with its share price, so figures are reported snapshots rather than fixed numbers.

From a 2001 licence to nearly 90 million subscribers, MTN Nigeria became the backbone of how the country calls, connects and pays.

Controversies

MTN Nigeria’s best-known controversy came in 2015, when the telecoms regulator NCC imposed a record fine of $5.2 billion over millions of improperly registered SIM cards that had not been deactivated on time.

After negotiations, the penalty was reduced to 330 billion naira in a 2016 settlement, which the company paid, and it agreed to list on the Nigerian Exchange. Like other big operators, it has also faced periodic regulatory and consumer-protection matters. Viorah TV reports these only as public record, taking no position.
