Lagos Policing Is Nigeria’s Most Complex, Says DIG

Date:

Lagos policing is Nigeria’s most complex security challenge, according to Deputy Inspector-General of Police Adegoke Fayoade. He described the state as the country’s toughest to police, pointing to its huge population, strategic importance and fast-changing security dynamics during an official visit to the Lagos State Police Command in Ikeja.

Why Lagos policing is so complex

Fayoade said Lagos, with an estimated population of more than 20 million people, demands a responsive, adaptive and intelligence-led approach. The sheer density, constant movement of people and goods, and the state’s role as Nigeria’s commercial heartbeat combine to create policing pressures unlike anywhere else in the country. He argued that a well-structured, intelligence-driven system is essential to keep pace with those demands.

The challenges he cited

The DIG acknowledged persistent security problems such as armed robbery and cult-related violence, which test the command’s resources. At the same time, he praised officers for sustained efforts in tackling these threats. His comments framed Lagos as a place where success depends on constant adaptation, technology and intelligence, rather than routine policing methods alone.

An intelligence-led approach

Fayoade, who also oversees information and communications technology in the force, emphasised the role of data and intelligence in modern policing. The message aligns with a broader push to modernise the Nigeria Police, using better information to anticipate and prevent crime rather than only responding after the fact. In a megacity like Lagos, that shift is presented as a necessity rather than an option.

Why it matters for residents

For ordinary Lagosians, effective policing affects daily life, from commuting safely to running businesses. Official recognition of the city’s unique challenges can shape how resources and strategies are allocated. Residents will ultimately judge such statements by results on the ground, including response times, visible safety and the handling of the threats the DIG acknowledged.

Securing a fast-growing megacity

Lagos is one of Africa’s largest and fastest-growing urban areas, a magnet for migration and commerce that generates enormous policing demands. The constant inflow of people, the density of informal settlements and the scale of economic activity create conditions that differ sharply from quieter states. Security experts argue that conventional policing struggles to keep pace in such an environment, and that data, technology and community cooperation are increasingly central to staying ahead of crime. Initiatives that encourage residents to share information, alongside investment in surveillance and rapid response, are often cited as the direction modern urban policing must take. At the same time, trust between communities and the police remains a sensitive issue, and heavy-handed tactics can undermine cooperation. Balancing firmness against crime with accountability and public confidence is part of what makes the task so complex. For a city that serves as Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre, the stakes are high: insecurity can deter investment and disrupt livelihoods, while visible safety supports growth. The DIG’s remarks reflect a recognition that Lagos requires a tailored, intelligence-driven model rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

The remarks underline the scale of the task facing security agencies in Nigeria’s largest urban centre. Viorah TV will continue to follow policing and security developments in Lagos.
