What Nancy Isime said

Isime told the podcast that while love is important, it is not the same as a comfortable life, and that financial pressure can take a toll on couples and their families. “Marriage is not a poverty alleviation scheme,” she said, adding that she does not believe marrying a poor man can make a woman happy.

She explained that when rent is due, school fees cannot be paid and there is no food in the house, it becomes difficult to enjoy married life. According to her, love can exist without money, but love and a fantastic life are not the same thing.

She framed her view as practical rather than dismissive of love, saying she was not arguing that relationships need money to exist, only that comfort and romance are separate things.

Advice for intending couples

The actress advised couples to attain a reasonable level of financial stability before getting married and raising children. She argued that adequate preparation can reduce avoidable stress in the home and improve overall family wellbeing.

Her message echoed advice often shared by relationship commentators, who note that money worries are among the most common sources of friction for young families.

A familiar debate

Her comments tapped into a long-running conversation in Nigeria about the role of money in relationships. The topic tends to divide opinion, and her remarks drew mixed reactions online, with some agreeing that financial readiness eases marriage and others insisting love should come first.

Such conversations frequently trend on Nigerian social media, where celebrities’ opinions on marriage and money attract intense engagement. Whatever side fans take, Isime’s central point was that couples should plan their finances before committing, rather than assuming affection alone will smooth over money problems.

A rising Nollywood voice

Isime, who is 34, has previously spoken about the qualities she values in a partner, stressing that good character and kindness matter to her alongside stability. She remains one of Nollywood’s most visible stars, balancing acting with hosting and brand work.

Her willingness to speak openly on personal topics has kept her a regular subject of discussion among fans and commentators, and she continues to feature in major film and television projects.
