Details of the Eric Chelle contract

Chelle agreed the deal after meeting top officials of the Nigeria Football Federation and the National Sports Commission in Abuja. The agreement keeps him in charge of the senior national team while adding responsibility for the under-23 side.

Reports indicate the new terms come with a significant pay rise, with the coach now set to earn around 100,000 dollars a month, up from a previous figure of about 45,000 dollars. The federation will also reportedly take over the salaries of his backroom staff, who had been paid out of his own pocket.

Eyes on the Olympics

Chelle’s expanded brief includes the task of qualifying the U-23 team for the 2028 Olympic Games. Nigeria has not featured in the football event at the Olympics since Rio 2016, making a return a clear priority for the federation.

Combining the senior and youth roles is intended to create continuity, allowing the coach to identify and develop emerging talent who could progress into the senior set-up. Supporters of the move say it could strengthen the pipeline of players for years to come.

Why the federation kept Chelle

The decision follows Nigeria’s third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. That campaign, while falling short of the title, was seen as a step in the right direction, and the federation opted for stability rather than change.

Retaining a coach who knows the squad and the environment can help build momentum heading into future qualifiers and tournaments. The federation appears to have judged that continuity offers the best path forward.

A demanding dual role

Managing two national teams is a substantial undertaking, with overlapping schedules and competing demands. Chelle will need a well-organised support structure to balance senior fixtures with the youth team’s qualifying commitments.

The federation’s pledge to cover his assistants’ wages suggests an effort to professionalise the set-up and ease the burden on the coach. How smoothly the arrangement works in practice will become clearer as the calendar fills up.

What it means for Nigeria

For Super Eagles fans, the priority remains success at senior level, including qualification for major tournaments. The added focus on the U-23s, however, signals a longer-term vision aimed at rebuilding Nigeria’s presence at youth and Olympic competitions.

Fan expectations rise

Supporters have welcomed the clarity over the coaching situation, though many stressed that results will ultimately determine how the decision is judged. Qualification for major tournaments remains the benchmark by which any Super Eagles coach is measured.

With a young squad and an expanded remit, Eric Chelle now has both the time and the mandate to shape the team over a longer horizon. The federation will hope that continuity translates into the consistency that has sometimes eluded Nigerian football.

With his future settled, attention turns to results on the pitch. Chelle now carries the hopes of both the present and the next generation, a dual responsibility that will define his expanded tenure.
