INEC Debunks Viral Claim on CVR Suspension in Delta

The Independent National Electoral Commission has dismissed a viral report claiming a CVR suspension in Delta, insisting the exercise is running normally on its planned schedule.

The Gist

  • INEC dismisses viral CVR suspension claim in Delta
  • Says voter registration running on schedule
  • Urges residents to ignore fake report

INEC said the message circulating online was false and misleading, and stressed it did not come from the commission.

What the CVR suspension in Delta claim said

The viral report alleged that Continuous Voter Registration in Akwukwu Igbo, Oshimili North Local Government Area, had been suspended over a faulty machine.

INEC rejected that account. It said registration was deployed to Ibusa earlier on Thursday, where the exercise held successfully in line with the approved rotation plan.

The commission explained that centres move between communities on a structured timetable, so the absence of officials in one location does not mean a shutdown.

When registration resumes in Akwukwu Igbo

INEC said the centre at Akwukwu Igbo is scheduled to resume operations from 6 July to 10 July as part of the local government rotation.

It urged residents of Akwukwu Igbo and nearby communities to disregard the viral message and rely only on official channels for accurate updates.

Eligible voters, the commission added, should proceed with registration and updates as scheduled, without fear of cancellation or disruption.

How the rotation system works

Under Continuous Voter Registration, INEC moves its machines and staff between communities so that more areas get covered over time.

That means a centre may be active in one town this week and another the next. The system is designed to stretch limited equipment across many wards.

Misreading that movement as a cancellation, INEC said, is a common source of confusion that bad actors can exploit.

Why the denial matters

Voter registration is a sensitive subject as Nigeria looks ahead to the 2027 general elections. False claims can discourage people from enrolling.

INEC has repeatedly warned that misinformation about its processes spreads quickly and can damage public confidence in the electoral system.

By moving fast to correct the record, the commission signalled it wants citizens to trust official information over unverified social media posts.

What residents should do

Officials advised eligible voters to follow the published rotation schedule and confirm dates for their communities through verified INEC platforms.

The commission encouraged anyone unsure about their registration centre to seek clarification rather than act on rumours.

For now, INEC maintains that the registration drive in Delta remains active and on track, with no suspension in place.

Tackling election misinformation

The episode is part of a broader battle against election misinformation in Nigeria. False posts about dates, venues and procedures spread fast online.

Ahead of 2027, INEC has leaned on rapid rebuttals, verified social media accounts and public education to counter rumours.

Officials say the goal is to make sure confusion does not keep eligible Nigerians away from registration desks.

Civil society groups have urged citizens to cross-check claims before sharing them, warning that a single false post can ripple across thousands of phones.

In Delta, the commission’s quick response appeared aimed at stopping exactly that kind of spread.
