Tems to Shine at the 2026 BET Awards With Historic Nominations

Date:

Tems is set to place Nigeria back in the global spotlight after being announced as both a performer and one of the most nominated African acts at the 2026 BET Awards. The Grammy-winning singer leads the Nigerian contingent with three major nominations.

Three nominations and a performance slot

Tems is nominated for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, the BET Her Award for her song “First,” and the Viewer’s Choice Award for “Raindance,” her collaboration with British rapper Dave. Together, the nods make her the most nominated African act at this year’s ceremony.

She has also been confirmed among the headline performers, joining a lineup that includes Cardi B, Doechii, Kehlani and Common. For Tems, it is another marker of how firmly she has crossed into the global mainstream.

When and where the ceremony holds

The 2026 BET Awards will take place on June 28 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California, hosted by comedian Druski. The show celebrates achievements across music, film, sports and television, and remains one of the biggest nights in Black entertainment.

Cardi B leads all artists with six nominations this year, followed by Kendrick Lamar and Mariah the Scientist. Tems sits among a strong field with three nods, underlining her standing alongside the industry’s biggest names.

An R&B evolution

This year’s nominations reflect a notable shift. Rather than being recognised mainly as an international act, Tems is now competing squarely in core R&B and pop categories, a sign that she is being measured by impact rather than geography.

Since her breakout features and her debut album, Born in the Wild, Tems has carved out a sound rooted in softness, spirituality and emotional precision. That distinct identity has helped her win over critics and audiences worldwide.

A historic moment for Nigeria

Leading African acts at a ceremony of this scale is a meaningful milestone, not just for Tems but for Nigerian music’s global push. Her presence continues a strong BET legacy built by Nigerian stars in recent years.

As June 28 approaches, expectation is high. Whether or not she wins, Tems has already turned the 2026 BET Awards into another showcase of Nigerian talent on the world stage.
